You don't have to hook first: sometimes, walking toward the enemy with W (Overdrive) + E (Power Fist, knock-up) then Q when they Flash is more effective.

Your Q (Rocket Grab) passes through minions if you position at an angle — look for unexpected angles from bushes or the sides.

The passive (Mana Barrier) gives you a shield when you're low HP — this can bait enemies into engaging on a false kill.

Your E resets your auto-attack and knocks up — after a successful hook, auto → E immediately for the guaranteed knock-up.

In late game, hooking the enemy carry can win the teamfight instantly — play around vision and bushes.

ALWAYS stay behind minions in lane: Blitzcrank's hook is blocked by units.

When Blitzcrank misses his Q (cooldown 20-12s), it's your window to trade aggressively — he has nothing without his hook.

Watch out for his level 2 power spike (Q + E): a hook followed by a knock-up is often a kill in lane.

If you're a tank or support, getting hooked intentionally can be advantageous — it prevents your carry from getting grabbed instead.
